"are you ok" she said softly "Fine" sniffed Kestan "Just...." "Upset" Sarawine finished off his sentance "you're justified to be" Kestan sat down again sadly "He was a good man, a good friend"

"I could tell," Sarawine said slowly. Kestan sniffed, rubbing at his eyes. "I'm sorry," he said. "This is no way for me to be acting." Sarawine sat down beside him. "As I said," she said quietly. "You're justified to be upset." Kestan tried to argue again but couldn't find the words. He dropped his head into his arms. Sarawine gently placed a hand on his shoulder, looking upward towards the stars. "The Elves believe that those lost in battle are greeted into the Halls of Mandos where they are celebrated as heroes," she said. Kestan slowly lifted his head. "Where they dine with the gods and rest for for all of eternity." Kestan wiped his eyes again. "I've heard such stories." Sarawine smiled gently. "Tirgon died with honour. No man deserves such an early death, but he did what he needed to do for us all." Kestan was smart enough to know that she was saying this simply to make him feel better, but part of him wanted to believe her for the same reason. He gently touched Sarawine's hand and let her embrace him. "Thank you, Lady Sarawine."

Lady Sarawine! Sarawine was taken back by his words. No one called her Lady Sarawine! No one! She had said it to make him feel better yes, but it was what she believed. Why had she called her that?
Sarawine looked at him trying to hide her confusion to sympathise with him, he didn't need her to be difficult

"Maybe we should both get some rest," mumbled Kestan. Sarawine shrugged. "It's a nice night. I'm not tired." Kestan smiled. "To be honest, neither am I." He hesitated, then, "Would you like to take a walk with me, Sarawine?" "Is it safe?" she asked, standing up with him. "I'm sure we can defend ourselves," Kestan said. "It would be good for me to...talk. I don't know much about your race, and I'd like to learn more."

"There is not much you need to know" said Sarawine "But I am interested to hear your story also, I'm not often in the company of men" They two walked from the camp into the woods

For hours they walked, sharing stories and tales of their people, fables and myths, histories and experiences, until they found themselves sitting together on higher ground in the middle of the forest watching the sun rise below them. Sarawine was almost asleep, leaning against Kestan's shoulder. Kestan knew they should get back to the camp, that the others would worry if they woke and they weren't there, but he was so relaxed, just sitting there, listening to Sarawine's gentle breath, watching the clouds burn away, thinking of everything and nothing... Sarawine woke with a start, making Kestan jump. "Oh, my...it's morning...!" she sat up quickly. "I didn't realise...how long have I been asleep?" "Only a few minutes," Kestan lied. Sarawine rubbed her eyes. "Did you hear that?" "Hear what?" Kestan asked, frowning. "Something woke me...a voice..." Sarawine glanced around. "There it is again!" This time Kestan heard it as well: a voice not far away, calling to them. "Kestan! KESTAN!" Gomel raced up the hill with Rustin not far behind. "Kestan, boy, where have you two been! Sun and moon, we've been callin' all over!" Kestan stood up as Rustin joined them. "Gomel, Rustin--what's wrong?" "It's Tirgon," Rustin gasped. "We woke and you weren't there so we assumed you'd gone back to his grave. But when we got there you weren't there--but he's gone!" "What?" Kestan and Sarawine chorused. "His grave's been dug up," Gomel said, "and he's gone!"

"What!?" Kestan was shocked "Who would do such a thing!?" Sarawine put her hand on his shoulder supportiveley, "It's ok Kestan" she said "They won't have got far, we can probably catch them, hoping it's not the rest of those goblins it should be easy"

Kestan felt like bursting into tears all over again. He was barely aware of Rustin leading him down to where just last night the earth had marked the burial of their friend Tirgon, where now the wildflowers Sarawine had arranged were torn and scattered and where the deep hole was uprooted, earth littering the grass. His mind was clouded and racing. Who would do such a thing...? "What do we do?" Rustin asked timidly. "I'm gonna take a scout out for anyone around," Gomel grunted, shifting his axe in his hand. Sarawine gently laid a hand on Kestan's shoulder, but Kestan didn't respond, staring at the ground.
