"What do you offer a guard of the Underworld?" Rondis said for the eighth time, pacing back and forth in front of the bed. "What could we possibly have that they'd want?" "...Freedom?" Orion suggested. "Not to mention the danger of--hold it," Rondis said suddenly. "What did you say?" "Surely anyone serving under Hades is a prisoner," Orion said. "We could offer them freedom." "In exchange for ours?" Rondis exclaimed. "We're already setting one person free, we don't need to release the whole of the Underworld!" "But it's the only thing we have that they could possibly want," Orion said. Rondis strode up to him and put both hands on the bed either side of him. "Will you listen to what you're saying? You want to release Laura by releasing the boatman in exchange for our freedom!" "One of our's freedom," Orion corrected. "Oh, what a difference that makes!" Rondis cried. "Whose do you intend to give up, yours or mine? Want to arm wrestle over it?!" "If we captured someone we could exchange his life back into the Underworld for Laura's," Orion said calmly. "Great, but I don't think that'll get us Laura back. That'll get us into the Underworld instead." "Isn't that what we want?" "We want to come out again!" "Then we'll just have to trick the boatman!" Rondis sudddenly froze. "Of course!" he cried. "It's perfect!" He dropped to his knees to address Orion at eye level. "The boatman of the River Stix is bound to his post because of what he does. He ships the dead over to the Underworld and not a single one comes out again, because they can't escape now they're dead. The boatman is bound to Hades' will for as long as none of his passengers ever return. But if we could get over the threshold without being dead--if we could trick the boatman into letting us across--we could save Laura and bring her back! That would release the boatman from his curse without jeopardising our freedom! We could use his release as our ticket to the Underworld! A return ticket! It's perfect!" They set out to go to The Underworld, there hearts were beating in there chests. "Now you realise, when we're in we have to find Laura, that will not be easy. Hades rules all The Underworld, he has eyes everywhere, we will not go unoticed." Said Orion thoughtfully "I know." "And you understand that if everything comes of like we want it to, we still probably won't get out alive." "I know." "Right, just making sure."

"One question," Rondis said, as they walked. "What?" "How do we find the entrance to the Underworld?" Orion hesitated. "The River Stix is the entrance." "Great. So, how do we find the Stix?" "Well, most people find it by dying." "Oh," said Rondis. Then, "Great." "Well, Laura got there without dying," Orion said. "The harpies took her. So maybe we can get them to take us." Rondis stopped in his tracks. "You're joking, right?" he exploded. "Purposely get ourselves captured by the harpies?!" "We'd get them to let go when we got there," Orion continued. "Oh right," Rondis said sarcastically, "I'm glad you brought that up. 'Please, Miss Harpy, this'll do for now, just set me over there between the burning fields and the entrance to hell'!" "Sarcasm is the tool of evil," Orion said distractedly, thinking. "I'll be a tool of evil in a moment," Rondis growled. "A destructive one." "Maybe if we hold one of them hostage we can get them to lead us there," Orion suggested, ignoring Rondis. "Going back to the fact that they're bigger, stronger and in more numbers than us," Rondis put in. "Or--oh! Maybe there's a way of persuading them to take us!" "Like what?" Rondis said, experimentally feeling his bound arm that was hanging in a sling uselessly against his chest. Orion sat down, thinking. "Why would a harpy take someone to the Underworld...?" he wondered aloud. "Please tell," Rondis said sarcastically. "Because Hades wanted them," Orion suggested. "Because they had something they needed. Because they were dead..." He slowly looked up at Rondis. "I don't like that look in your eyes," Rondis said quickly. "That's it," Orion said. "Play dead." Rondis raised his eyebrows. "You're nuts." "There are ways," Orion said, sounding excited. "There are poisons that, when drunk, renders the drinker in every way lifeless for a specific time. If we were considered dead the Harpies would collect us and take us straight to the boatman. As soon as we came to the Valley we wake up and slay the harpies then make our own way there!" Rondis stared silently at him for a full ten seconds. "Several questions to that," he said eventually. "One: how do we know the harpies will think us dead?" "They have eyes all over the world. They instantly know when people die so they can collect them and take them to the Valley and the River." "Two: how do we defeat them?" "They'll only be two of them, and they'll be unarmed because they won't be expecting to fight." "Right. Three: how do we know we'll wake up when we get there? What if the timing doesn't work and we wake up with our souls stripped from our bodies? What if the poison doesn't work, or kills us?" "You're paranoid," Orion said vaguely. He was deep in thought again. "The poison can be timed to the exact second or to a location. It can lift when you reach a specific place, for instance, the Valley of Death. And the poison will work. We just have to get it from the right person." "Right. Got anyone in mind?"

"Well, there is a man, that is known for poison, hell he spent most of his life having it dripped into his eyes." "Whats his name?" "Loki." "Loki!?!?" "Yes." "Isn't he evil?" "Yes." "Brilliant." Orion sighed and bent down and touched the floor lightly. "Well there's no time like the present." He groaned pretending to draw a circle around himself. "What are you doing?" Asked Rondis worriedly "I'm summoning Loki, you may want to be careful, he can be a bit unpredictable." Said Orion slowly. He then began to chant a song, it was slow and eerie. Rondis could only make out a couple of words. Suddenly a flame exploded, and standing in the door way was a man. He had messy brown hair that covered most of his face, hie eyes were green and twinkled malicously as he looked them up and down. "Well, well. Look who wants my help again...the last time we dealed with each other you said I was nothing more then an animal who deserved to be hunted down." Said Loki slowly "That was long time ago, Loki." "Well i don't forget things easily, I had a long time to remember all the past deeds." Loki's voice was high pitched and a constant giggle in it. "Then I am sorry, but we need your help." Said Orion, he could see what Loki was trying to do, he was trying to get Orion into one of his games. "And why should I help you, my dear Orion." Laughed Loki "Because if you do then we will get Hades of your back for a while." Replied Orion "And how do you intend to do that?" Loki's eyes widened with intrest "We're going on a rescue attempt, if we succed I beleive that Hades will send every little minion he has after us, he'll no longer have time for small vendettas." Loki was silent for a moment. Orion watched him intently, he could see the clogs clicking in his brain. "What do you want from me?" Asked Loki eventtually "A poision, a poison to make one seem dead, but keep them alive." "Ah, you are very smart Orion, I can see why you were Artemis favourite hunting companion." Giggled Loki "Alright, I'll give you what you want." Said Loki, he shut his eyes and suddenly a glass with a gree substance appeared in his right hand. "There you go." He said handing it to Orion. As soon as Orion has put it in his pocket he grabbed Loki by the neck "I want you to know if this is real poison I'll kill you." "As you will." Said Loki. Orion let him go and watched him dissapear into thin air. "Right, Rondis drink this." Commanded Orion holding out the poison "What was that about it being real poison?" "Oh, nothing." "Then why are you making me drink it first?" "Umm, hurry up we don't have much time."

Rondis stared at him for a moment, then slowly took the bottle from him. "If this hurts me I'll force the rest down your throat before I die," he said. "The menacing tone doesn't suit your voice," Orion said. "You're better at sarcastic." "Thanks for that," Rondis said sarcastically, then glared at Orion. He gingerly sniffed at the bottle. "Why am I drinking it first?" "Because if you die I can hunt Loki down and kill him in your and Laura's name." Rondis tried to protest but nothing sprang to mind. "Fine." He raised the bottle again, then lowered it. "How exactly is this going to work? Am I just gonna fall backwards or is this gonna hurt?" "If you fall backwards it'll hurt anyway," Orion said. Rondis realised that he was evading the truth. He decided to just go for it. "Right. See you in the Valley...one way or another. If this doesn't work I'll wait on the banks of the River for you. For as long as it takes." "Just get on with it!" Noticing Orion's hand straying to his bow, Rondis raised the vial again and tipped about half of the green liquid down his throat. The poison burned his mouth the second it touched his tongue. Rondis released the vial, and Orion only just caught it in time. Rondis clutched his throat and tried to cough, but Orion grabbed him and placed a hand firmly over his mouth and nose. Rondis struggled, coughing and choking, until Orion was certain that the poison had been forced down his throat. He released him and Rondis fell to his knees, coughing violently. For a second Orion was sure it would kill him. He stayed his tongue before asking how it tasted. Rondis fell forward onto his uninjured hand, then onto the ground. Orion darted forward as his head smacked into the floor; by the time he'd rolled Rondis onto his back, his eyes were closed, his face still, as though he was asleep. Shaking, Orion hesitently placed a hand on his wrist, then onto his motionless chest. His pulse was still, and his heart silent. To any who cared to check now, he was dead.

Orion slowly drunk the rest of the poison, the pain was just as bad as it was for Orion, slowly he felt himself losing conciousness and slipped to the ground.
Slowly he awoke luckily everything had worked out fine, they were being carried down the valley of death, Orion rolled his head to the right and saw that Rondis was coming out of the coma as well. "I think its time to kill them before we get all the way to Hades." Whispered Orion "Okay, lets do it."

Rondis tried to move; his legs were clamped firmly together and his injured arm pinned to his side. reaching as far down as he could without attracting the attention of the Harpy carrying him, he slowly slid his knife out of his belt. Orion's were both bound but his legs were free. He focused all of his slowly awakening energy and swung his legs upwards, smashing them into the Harpy's chest. At the same moment, Rondis plunged the blade of his knife into his carrier's thigh. Two shrieks rang out and Orion and Rondis were dropped from fifteen feet. Orion hit the ground first, landing instinctively on his feet; his knees buckled and he fell to his knees, yelling as pain tore through his injured leg. Rondis landed in a heap beside him with a similar cry of pain. A moment later Orion was thrown back by one of the Harpies soaring back down to them. Rondis hurled his knife as hard as he could, landing the blade in the back of the Harpy's neck purely by chance; by the time the second had reached them, Orion's bow was in his hands and the Harpy fell with an arrow in his throat. Orion and Rondis crawled together out of the open and into a small sheltered area beneath the jagged cliffs, momentarily out of sight of any onlookers, stopping to catch their breath and to let the effects of the poison wear off. "I can't believe it," Rondis gasped. "We're alive. We're alive, we're alive, I can't believe we're alive." "What, you didn't trust me?" Orion panted, rearranging the bindings over the bleeding gash in his leg. "Did you expect me to?" Rondis snapped. "Jeez...I can't believe that worked." He peered out to see the bodies of the Harpies they had killed. "Wow...check it out." He pointed out to where, not a few yards from where they were hiding, a vast expanse of glittering, red water stretched into the distance. The River Stix stretched off in both directions, and was too wide to see the other bank; the ever-moving water was stained crimson in the reflection of the scarlet sky above them. A few yards to their left was a tiny, battered rowing boat, and seated beside this was-- "Look," Orion whispered, catching Rondis' arm. "The Boatman."

"So then I'll be free?" Asked the boatman after Orion finished explaing it to him "Yes." Answered Orion "What if you die while your in the underworld?" Asked the boatman, who looked old, is grey beard was soaked with sweat and tears, his light blue eyes looked crushed with age. His face was crinkled with all the wrinkles, his mouth was crooked and had a huge scar travelling across it. He was wearing a tatty grey robe, he was to big and draped of him, he was skinny and frail. "Then we die and you'll go back to doing your job, no harm done." Replied Orion. The boatman considered his options. Finally he answered... "And I thought today was going to be slow, no get in." Orion and Rondis stepped catiously into the boat, it didn't look all that safe, and they thought there wait would probably sink it.
Rondis gasped as he looked into the water, there were faces in it, all of them were screaming. "Aye, Hades occasionaly puts them in there when he can't be bothered to make room for them in the rest of The Underworld, it is not a pretty sight." Sighed the boatkeeper. "May I ask how come you do this? How did Hades get you?" Asked Rondis suddenly "I made a deal to save my wife's life. She died, I found my own way to get to The Underworld. Hades said he would allow her to live again as long as I walked out of The Underworld with out looking back. He tricked me, when I was close to outside world I heard her scream, obviously I turned round. Then Hades caught me and I was his slave forever more." Expalined the boatman "Thats awful, I'm sorry." Said Rondis "Well if you let me go, then you won't have to be sorry for anything...well here we are." He said pulling up at the bank.

Orion and Rondis stared. They couldn't help it. The far bank of the River Stix was connected to a great open plain that once could have been described as grassy; now the grass was dead, brown and sharp, and great craters littered its surface; in places flames still leaped across the field. In the far distance what looked like a great, broad spike of black rock thrust up to the black scorched sky; it was a castle, wide and tall, in which Rondis and Orion knew resided Hades, and somewhere within which Laura waited for them. Screams and cries of the damned and tortured echoed all around them from the field, and distantly figures moved across the field, stumbling, falling, crying. Rondis turned back to the boatman, who had already pushed off and was rowing slowly away, watching them sadly. Rondis started back towards the bank, desperate for any form of advice from the boatman. "The cries are quieter inside the palace," he said sadly. Then he and the little boat were consumed by the mist hovering above the water, and Rondis and Orion were left standing alone between the crimson river and the burning field, with the black castle looming ahead. "C'mon," Orion said quietly after a while. "Let's go."

The journey was long and tiresome, however they did not get hot. The opposite happened, the longer they walked the colder they got. As they walked everything seemed to be slipping away from them, every happy memory they had ever felt, was flowing away. The idea of laughter now seemed foreign and odd, the hope that they would get to the castle was now becoming little more then a little flicker. The cold was suffocating, it formed itself around them, it was almost inescapable. "Please, God make it stop." Whispered Rondis, his mind was now swam with despair and misery. "We're almost there, just keep going, if we stop then Hades will have our souls and we will become dead, just keep walking."
After what seemed like an eternity they started climbing up to the castle, the further they climbed the more happier they became. It felt as though they were climbing out of The Underworld and into some place different. Hope started burning inside them. However the climb was hard, especially while injured. Ronids could only use one arm, he occasionally slipped, Orion barely cached him. Eventually they were standing outside palace. The place was dreadful up close. People were nailed to the gates, they were screaming, always screaming. Instead of a moat there were flames. Rondis saw humans trying to climb out of the flames, only to be pulled back in by a bodiless creature, tears were streaming down there burn and bloody eyes.
Orion kicked the door of the palace open, to there great surprise it just swung open. "I suppose Hades doesn't have much to fear." Coughed Orion. They entered the palace and sure enough the screams did die down but they could still be heard, they echoed all through the castle. "Right lets fine Laura." Said Rondis looking round the room. The floor was made of glass, underneath the glass was something that looked like fish tank, only it was not filled with fish, it was filled with bloody humans, there skin had been chewed of by piranhas. They beat helplessly against the glass. To the left of the room there was three doors, they were big and grand and to the right there was a large portrait of Hades. To Orions displeasure the eyes were following them. Finally at the end of the room was a stair case, it was lined with a blood red carpet and standing at the top of the stairs was Hades a grin spread across his face. "You, you are very smart. Getting in here unscathed like this...do you want your little friend? Well you can have her, you just have to get her out of the prison cell first." Laughed Hades "I'm guessing the prison cell is impossible to find." Groaned Rondis "Oh no, its been dying to meet you." Answered Hades "Its? What do you mean?" "Well I'll show you." Hades smile broadened, slowly the right wall began to rise of the ground and to the ceiling, standing behind it was the most ferocious creature they had seen. It was a sick mouldy green. The thing had three snarling heads, the teeth were as sharp as razorblades. Its eyes were a cat like, but the a fire burned in the pupils. Underneath its neck was a see through stomach. To there horror Laura was being kept in its stomach, tears were streaming out her eyes. "You see the hydra can store things in that part of its stomach for all eternity, the liquid feeds them. They can live in there forever. All you have to do is break open the stomach and you can have her...well have fun trying. Hydra, kill them." Commanded Hades, the hydra advanced on them, and the Hades high cackle echoed all through The Underworld.

The dopor slammed behind them. Rondis and Orion spun around even though they knew they were sealed in. They both turned back to the approaching Hydra. It took a step towards them. Orion and Rondis moved back instinctively. "Not good," Rondis muttered under his breath as they retreated, "not good, not good..." Orion heard the clinking of chains. He noticed that the Hydra's back leg was chained to the wall behind it. If they stood right up against the wall, they were out of its reach. He dragged Rondis $back as the creature made a swipe for him. "What are we gonna do now?" Rondis said, unable to tear his eyes away from the nearest head. "There has to be a way of defeating it," Orion said. Though he was trying to sound rational his voice was trembling. "There's a simple way of defeating any creaure." "Oh great," Rondis said. "Do let me know when you've thought of it. Which head are we going for first?" "Shut up," Orion said. Rondis looked down and saw Laura again, her hands pressed up against the translucent, rubbery surface of the thing's belly, her mouth open in an inaudible scream, tears running tracks through the dirt and blood on her face. It occured to Rondis that she didn't know how they'd got there. To her they had been caught; to her, they were dead. "That's it!" Orion cried suddenly. At the same moment the Hydra let out a piercing shriek, a sound that neither Orion nor Rondis had ever heard the likes of before. Uncontrolled, they both fell to their knees, their hands pressed over their ears, not just to block out the sound, but to shield from the pain, the sorrow and despair that washed upon them like ocean waves at the sound of such a terrible cry. Orion shook his head and forced himself to his feet. While the Hydra's head was still thrown back in it's howl, he darted to the side so he was standing beside it, perfectly in reach. Rondis looked up in time to give Orion a wide-eyed, terrified look that spelled out perfectly, "What they hell do you think you're doing?" With hands faster than sight, Orion had his bow in his hand and an arrow pointed not at the Hydra, but at Rondis. "What--" Rondis began. Orion fired the arrow with accuracy of years of experience; it missed him by inches, pinning his sleeve to the wall behind him. "Hey!" Rondis shouted, temporarily forgetting the situation. "What the heck are you playing at, you treacherous little--whoa!" His cry was cut short as his shout attracted the Hydra's full, three-headed attention. "Oh my--Orion! ORION! Help, help, help!" Orion was already darting behind the Hydra, using Rondis' loud and persistent fear as a decoy when the creature couldn't hear him. He had remembered the secret to the Hydra's weakness; it was the unprotected skin at the base of it's stomach, below the compartment their companion was locked in. If he could reach it, he could kill the Hydra easily. "Orion!" Rondis yelled, pressed fully up against the wall. "Help me!" Ducking beneath the creature's huge legs Orion found himself right underneath it, with its huge belly directly above him. Dropping to his hands and knees he rolled onto his back, snatching up his bow again, and fired directly upwards. The arrow just missed the unprotected skin, but it was enough to cause the Hydra a great deal of pain. Again the shriek was let out, high and devastating. Howling in pain and rage the Hydra thrashed about, and a second later it had pulled it's leg free of the chain behind him. "Shit," muttered Orion. He stole a glance over at Rondis, who had fallen to the ground, hands over ears, in easy range of the now unbound Hydra. Orion's last arrow had been jolted from the quiver and was lying a few feet from him. He rolled onto his stomach and reached for it. "Orion!" Rondis shouted again, terror in his voice. "Orion, Orion, Orion!" Orion stretched out as far as he could without moving lest he roll beneath the creature's huge feet; the tips of his fingers brushed the arrow's feathers. "Orion, help me!" He reached. His scrabbling fingers knocked the arrow further. "Orion!" Throwing himself forward Orion finally grabbed the arrow and shoved himself back below the Hydra. "ORION, HELP ME!" Bow forgotten, Orion thrust the arrowhead directly up into the Hydra's belly. The shriek that echoed out was louder, higher, ten times worse than anything either of them had ever heard before. For at least a minute there was nothing but that sound in either of their minds. Then the Hydra's front belly and throat exploded, showering everything in front of it in thick, black-red blood and casting Laura onto the ground. Orion darted back before being crushed by it's flailing feet before the Hydra collapsed back, dead.

Right I'm wrapping this up now.
Rondis breathed a sigh of releif as the Hydra fell to the ground, he couldn't beleive how lucky he was. Laura was sobbing on the ground, she was covered in dirt and blood, her skin had been cut from the bow. Orion was panting heavly, he looked up on the dead hydra, they had done it they had survived The Underworld. "NO!, YOU STUPID BASTARDS, THAT WAS MY HYDRA!" Screamed Hades in anger, his cold eyes turned into a dark red, his voice became low and dark, and blue flam surrounded his whole body. "Do you think I'll let you get away with that? Do you think I'll let you out of here? Your fools this is my realm, I am God, you can not kill me, I am forever." Shouted Hades. He advanced on Orion, Orion jumped backwards and picked up his bow and arrow, quickly he fired an arrow. Hades held a hand up to shield himself, the arrow pierced through his hand, orange blood started flowing down his hand. He let out a cry of pain, his red eyes widned in surprise. "You dare." He growled "So your not as forever as you would like us to think, everyones time comes and this is yours." Said Orion "No, I am a God, I do not die, I am Death." Said Hades, he held out his right hand, a sword manifested itself in it. It was surrounded by a light blue glow. He run towards Orion slashing maddly, Orion dodged and ducked out the way. Rondis jumped towards Hades trying to get the sword of him, Hades was to fast and slashed him across the stomach. Rondis moaned gently as he fell to the ground. Acting upon the moments pause Orion kicked the sword out of Hades hand and sruck Hades round the face. The orange blood poured out of his nose. The two battled striking blows, blood flowed out of both of them. Eventually Hades mannaged to get the better of Orion. He grasped him round the throat, his grip was like an iron vice. "Did you really think you could win this?" Gasped Hades, as Orion struggled to break his grip. "Goodbye, Orion...go back to the stars." Laughed Hades, suddenly his eyes widened with shock and horror. He looked down to see his sword sticking out of his stomach. "Oh God." Hades cried, he turned around to see Laura holding onto the sword. "You stupid little bitch." Moaned Hades, his grip on Orion weakened and he slipped to the floor, sobbing and gasping in pain. Slowly his body started to fade away into darkness, leaving nothing but his grey cloke. For a split second everything stood still, the screams of The Underworld stopped, peoples cries for mercy stopped. This travled up to are world, everyone stopped still, for a split second the whole world stood still, and for that split second everyone realised, that something was diffrent, that there was more light in the world and then everyone forgot it and went back on with there lives. "So thats it, Gods are killable?" Gasped Rondis gradually getting to his feet. "Not exactly." Said a voice, none of them reconigsed it, except it reminded them slightly of Hades. They all turned and a man stood in front of them, he even looked a bit like Hades. Instead of grey hair he had long blonde hair, his eyes were a light blue, they looked kind and happy. His cloak was not grey, it was white. "Who are you?" Asked Orion slightly fearfully "I am Hades." "What?! I just killed you." Groaned Orion, fearfully lifting his fists. "You did, but Hades was right, Gods never die, they change and fall. Some versions of them perish but the idea never dies, there will always be a Hades." "So what, all of that was for nothing, we're dead, aren't we?" Sniffed Rondis, trying to stop the blood flowing out of his stomach "No, the old Hades was a monster, I am not a monster. Laura had a point, death shouldn't be like this and it won't be any longer." Hades held out a hand, all the cries stopped and suddenly light shone through the window, instead of sharp rocks and stones, there was a field. A magnificent one, its grass run on and on like an ocean of beuty, flowers of every kind sprouted out the Earth, each one giving on a delightful smell. Somewhere far of in the distance tress grew they were tall and pround, there leaves a powerful green. "The Underworld is a big place, there will be a place for sinners, but they will only go there if they choose it. Hades made death something to fear, every dead soul would come here and suffer for eternity, no matter what life they lived. From now on I will make sure that the people will have a happy after life." Said Hades, looking out over his creation. "Now I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave, I fear I have a long century ahead of me, and I need to get to work." Sighed Hades. "Thank you." they all said, and limped out of the castle and walked back to the boatman, who was waiting for them. "So I'm free?" He asked upon seeing them. "That you are." Replied Orion. Tears of happiness welled up in his eyes and for the first time in thousands of years he laughed.
Bakc on the real world Orion, Laura and Rondis had there wounds seen to and finally settled down in field to eat something, for the first time in a long while they had nothing to fear.
And back in the real world the boatman sat down on a beach and for the first time in a long time, saw the sun set and realised, just how spectuacular life was.
